Venice Canals

Sketching a unique house in the Venice Canals.

Lone stool

Here is a sketch by our 11th grade master of contrast and value. A lone stool in an unidentified location in Venice, Jose DB.

Sketching at the canals

Hello! This is Nancy, the other teacher adviser for the AV urban sketcher club. I am actually an English teacher who saw this group of sketching students last fall and wanted to learn how to sketch myself! It's been fun growing alongside my students and learning from the fabulous Ms. Lowe, art teacher extraordinaire. :) This is a sketch from the Venice canals. You can see two of our other sketchers working on their craft (that's Jose DB in the corner!)
Just a lazy afternoon at home.
Hi, it's Julia here! Last week, the Urban Sketchers went to the Venice Canals which have some of the most unique and diverse homes along with idyllic scenery.  This house had a style that interested me and I was happy with what I got out of it! I'm excited to continue to get better and I hope you'll enjoy seeing my improvement. :)

Animo Urban Sketchers at the Venice Canals

Just a short walk from our high school are the famous Venice, CA canals.  We took advantage of the extra light before Daylight Savings in November and enjoyed an hour or so out in our neighborhood.

ANimo Urban Sketchers 2012/13

First Thursday sketch off campus.  @Abbott Kinney.   It was a great day on Abbott Kinney!  After a short walk from school and some last minute instructions the students moved off to draw on location.  Student upload day is scheduled and coming soon.

We also chose our officers with Gabi Sarni (12th grade) as Club President and Cloe Nomic (10th) as club VP!

We have an amazing group this year!

Graduation.

On our last outing before school ended I had the students practice an exercise that I learned at the USK Symposium in Lisbon last year.  We rotated through each others sketchbooks every couple of minutes.  This is my sketchbook as completed by Carla, Cloe, Gabriel, Tyler, Jose, and others.

It was with great pride and honor that I watched as Animo Urban Sketchers first President graduated on June 7th.  Carla will be attending college and continuing to sketch.  I'm sure she'll guest artist with the AVCHS USK group when back in town during breaks. I am looking forward to her future participation at a Symposium.

Guest Artist Marcia Milner-Brage

On March 8th the Ánimo Venice Urban Sketchers hosted guest Urban Sketch Marcia Milner-Brage from Iowa and the Midwest group!

It was a wonderful opportunity for the high school sketchers to meet an experienced Urban Sketcher!

Carla, 16. This is a small sketch I made of my kid sister as she so peacefully read To Kill a Mockingbird.

This is a little fire truck where I stache my moola.

I was thinking of Godzilla so I decided to draw two old toys about to engage in battle.
I was lacking sketches in my book so I decided to quickly draw my friend, Josue

Animo Sketchers @ Abbott Kinney

Some student and adviser work. Some shy sketchers were absent.

Some Animo Urban Sketchers

The sketchers had a fun afternoon of architecture sketching on this busy street where old Venice meets new.  We drew a lot of attention and even had an interested woman ask to become a member of the club.

Los Angeles Sketches

Santa Monica Pier

Hello Urban Sketchers. This was drawn a while back on our very first trip to Abbot Kinney. It was my first time using water colors on an actual sketch.

Ist sketch back in 2012

Animo Urban Sketchers are back at it for 2012 and with blog authorship spreading I'm expecting to see lots of new uploads!

This is my first sketch of the New Year.  With light still fading fast on our little group and the chill coming in quickly off the ocean, we are staying close to school for our outings.  This is a favorite spot right now:  The Talking Stick coffee shop.  Lots of people to practice drawing and hot chocolate while sketching!  In this drawing you can just see A-USK members Gabriella and Nuri peeking over the the man on the left.
